Authentic, Home-Made, Fresh – Shrikhandwala Nagpur Now Delivers To Your Doorstep

I love my sweets way too much and have travelled far and wide to fetch my dessert! So if there was an apocalypse and someone asked me that one dessert I wanted to have one last time, it would be Shrikhand. So ever since I saw a Shrikhandwala Nagpur post in the Nagpur Foodies group on Facebook, I wanted to try it out. Took a while coming, but I was sure I am going to get it on this trip!

Origin Of Shrikhand –

The first reference of Shrikhand goes as far back as 400 BC, where it has been referred to as ‘Shikhrini’ in Sanskrit. Shri (milk) + Khand (sugar) = Shrikhand, which is made from strained curd (chakka) and sugar blended together. Lot of other additions like Saffron, Cardamom, Dry Fruits, Pulp, etc. enhance the flavour of Shrikhand. It is an essential part of most Marathi and Gujarati households and is cooked with relative ease. Given how easy it is to make Shrikhand, it’s surprising that very few places get it right. All the reviews I heard, said that Shrikhandwala Nagpur had the best one they had ever tasted!

The Shrikhandwala Nagpur Story –

Started sometime in early September 2016, Shrikhandwala Nagpur is a marriage between a traditional recipe and an entrepreneurial spirit. Rasika Mohidekar learnt the intricacies of the recipe from her mother in law. Then she went about tweaking the traditional recipe with some new ingredients and tried sourcing from different vendors. And thus, we have Shrikhandwala Nagpur, which is her venture. Knowing that, it should actually be Shrikhandwali and not Shrikhandwala, but that’s her call! All we care is that we have an option to enjoy home-made Shrikhand that is delivered to us at home.

Shrikhandwala Nagpur has already set high standards for themselves by using the best ingredients. Most critical element here is the milk, which needs to be of a really high quality. Given the inconsistency in the quality of milk that is delivered at home, they have gone with Dinshaws Sarvottam milk. This has given them the best chakka for the Shrikhand. Even this process is curated to perfection with temperature checks and timing techniques, enabling them to maintain consistency.

They continue to churn out Shrikhand from their home in Pratap Nagar. Starting from a few kgs of sale a day, they have touched 20 kgs already and even have wait times now. Given the surge in demand, they are going to set-up a new unit in Abhyankar Nagar for commercial purpose. So, we have a lot to cheer about in the coming months.

Ordering from Shrikhandwala –

I just called them around 11am on their published number on their Shrikhandwala Facebook page. Rasika answered the call herself. I was informed that they are doing 2 types of Shrikhand – dry fruit and mango. Given how I don’t get to have it in Hyderabad, I ordered half-half kg of both types. I was informed that it was being made now and would be ready after 1pm. Thus, began the long wait of 2 hrs!

Finally, around 1:30 pm I got a call and went down to collect my parcel. To my surprise, Ninad Mohidekar, Rasika’s husband, came to deliver it personally. I had a long chat with him about the concept and how they made Shrikhandwala into a brand. The honesty and love for their product shows in the way he spoke about their journey. Then it was finally time to dig in!

Dry Fruit Shrikhand from Shrikhandwala Nagpur

I started with the dry fruit version first. From the first look, it had a beautiful tinge of yellow, like the one that comes from high quality Kesar. Topped with dry fruits, it made a very pretty picture. First bite and the creaminess and flavour came rushing through. The texture was super smooth, yet it’s super light and not greasy like the other commercial ones. I always complain about how most people go over-board with Nutmeg (jaifal), but at Shrikhandwala, it doesn’t over-power at all. Overall, it’s so fresh and light that I dint know where to stop! But then I wanted to try the other one as well.

Amrakhand from Shrikhandwala Nagpur –

For some reason, I have never quite liked this version of Shrikhand. The mango flavour makes me miss the actual Shrikhand taste. And most places use a mango syrup to make it, which spoils the final product. At Shrikhandwala, they use real Alphonso Mango pulp to make it. The real mango punch comes through the Shrikhand as well. With such balanced flavours, I might just start liking Amrakhand too. For me, this was like super thick mango yoghurt, not overly sweet and delicious.
